Putting SDG16+ into practice

Since 2015, Saferworld, Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding member, has worked to support the national adaption of the commitments found in SDG16+ of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to build peaceful, just and inclusive societies. Central in the discussions at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) every July, in New York, is both the SDGs in review and presentations by countries that have conducted a Voluntary National Review (VNR). Each year, a set 6 out of 17 SDGs are reviewed in depth. In 2019, SDG16 on peaceful, just and inclusive societies will be reviewed. This makes HLPF2019 extremely relevant to the entire membership of CSPPS work to contribute to conflict prevention, building resilience and sustaining peace in fragile settings towards optimal participation and inclusion of civil society.

CSPPS is embarking on a trajectory supporting five fragile and conflict-affected countries (out of 51 countries that have volunteered to present their VNRs to the HLPF2019) in preparing their VNR. The states are the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Chad, Timor-Leste and Sierra Leone. The Platform is supporting the meaningful inclusion, participation and contribution of local and national CSOs – and ensuring that New Deal principles are adhere to – throughout the various consultation and VNR report drafting stages as planned by the governments of the five targeted countries.

This infographic created by Saferworld, illustrates how this ‘localisation’ approach works in 11 important steps:
