Finding space for a New Deal in Nigeria
The CSPPS Country team in Nigeria set up a large-scale, ambitious project aiming to further educate and mobilize all actors including government, civil society and donors to work towards the implementation of the IDPS principles and New Deal in Nigeria, in anticipation of Nigeria’s joining the IDPS and g7+.
First, they organized a conference on UNSCR 2250 (Youth, Peace and Security) involving 100 stakeholders, resulting in a clear statement that participants were ready to produce a concrete and long-term strategy to implement UNSCR 2250 in Nigeria. Secondly, 27 members of the Technical Committee held meetings over a period of 4 days to learn, deliberate and agree on the content for a draft document to understand the IDPS/New Deal in Nigeria. This document informed a two-day training for 60 government and civil society stakeholders, creating further awareness and strengthening the knowledge-base among stakeholders who are now willing to champion the advocacy for the Nigerian government to officially sign onto the IDPS so as to support the country’s peacebuilding and statebuilding priorities in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG16 in particular. Finally a consultant was recruited to help draft the National Plan of Action on YPS, informing a one-day validation workshop to provide inputs.
